For much of Percy’s life, he felt like people were always telling him what he couldn’t do.
He lives with autism and has learning disabilities. As a foster child, he spent most of his young life in group homes before more recently settling in with a family where he found stability.
Finding a job on top of it all can be a challenge for people like Percy, but thanks to United Way East Ontario’s work with LiveWorkPlay, he gets the chance to show his strengths.
“Learning disabilities are tough when you’re in high school. A lot of people doubted I was going to get through it. But look where I am now,” said Percy with a smile.
Percy has been working at a DHL Express warehouse in Ottawa for two years and is beloved by his coworkers for his outgoing personality and willingness to take on new tasks.
“Originally, when we had provided Percy as our first candidate, things just went so well that DHL reached out to ask if we had any other candidates,” said Jen Broad, Workplace Inclusion Specialist, LiveWorkPlay. “That was really great and affirming that it was a strong match.”
Improving lives, creating stronger communities
LiveWorkPlay is an employment supports program for individuals with intellectual disabilities and autistic persons. It is one of the original members of United Way East Ontario’s Employment Accessibility Resource Network (EARN).
“One of the biggest challenges we face is connecting with employers who are looking to hire inclusively,” said Jen. “United Way has been a fantastic partner in creating new opportunities for folks in need, and in sharing resources necessary to develop new partnerships and new roles for candidates like Percy.”
In a typical year, LiveWorkPlay helps about 50 people land jobs and more than 300 get started on their search. They also work with employers on retention and with existing employees on career advancement.
EARN brings together employers, service providers, and other stakeholders to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities and promote inclusive, accessible workplaces.
“More employers who are open to creating inclusive teams can really enjoy all of the proven benefits of a more inclusive workforce.”

Not to mention the difference it can make in the life of someone like Percy.
“This job has changed my life,” he said. “I’ve met some wonderful people that I can relate to and talk to. I just love coming to work.”
All part of our social and systems change work
At United Way we know that when we work together with a common vision, when we think differently about problems, and when we shift power imbalances, we can change the systems that hold many people back.
The vision of EARN is to provide workplaces across Prescott-Russell, Ottawa, Lanark County, and Renfrew County with the knowledge, resources and supports they need to increase employment opportunities and outcomes for people with disabilities.
When you give to United Way, your support brings us one step closer to a future where everyone thrives.
