Position Summary and Responsibilities:

Please Note: This position is partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program. To apply you must be:

This role is based in Ottawa, but serves the region of Prescott-Russell, Ottawa, Lanark and Renfrew Counties. This position is a hybrid position with two days a week expected onsite.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

The Community Engagement & Project Officer will work with United Way East Ontario’s Community Impact team, specifically project step team members, to support community and youth engagement activities as well as a special project on youth mental health, addictions, substance and technology use. They will help us explore and design a project, initiative or opportunity that aligns with UWEO’s Youth Engagement Strategy, culminating in a business proposal, written report, or oral presentation.

The Officer is responsible for tasks that include:

  • Working with project step’s backbone team and relevant committees to leverage existing knowledge on youth engagement and related topics.
  • Conducting informal research to collect, analyze, organize, and share new information, building on existing knowledge e.g. youth engagement programs, youth-led initiatives, funding opportunities, partnership opportunities, etc.
  • Supporting region-wide engagement as needed e.g. youth-adult partnerships, community collaborations, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Recommending an innovative and inclusive youth engagement program, event, campaign, project, or other initiative through a business proposal, a written report, or an oral presentation.
  • Exploring things like communication activities, marketing strategies, funding considerations, budgeting, relevant competitors, and risk mitigation strategies to be included in the recommendations.
  • Participating in additional, emergent opportunities for learning and experience.

Qualifications:

  • Ongoing or completed post-secondary degree or diploma in Social Sciences, Social Services, Community Development, Business, Marketing, Communications, or related area.
  • Student, volunteer, or work experience in managing projects, marketing, communications, event planning, fundraising, research, writing, working in teams, and/or with community members.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software.

Skills:

  • Great with people: listening, relationship-building, conflict resolution, and sensitivity.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage own time as well as multiple projects in a dynamic, hybrid (in-person and virtual) environment.
  • Good judgment, discretion, creativity, and critical thinking aligned with the objectives of United Way East Ontario.
  • Verbal and written communications skills, including:
    • Presenting or facilitating,
    • Ability to translate complex information into easy-to-understand content e.g. reports, blog posts, or visual infographics, and
    • Analysis, writing, and research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Basic graphic design or visual design/layout of communication materials. (Asset)
  • French language skills. (Asset)
  • Knowledge or experience with youth mental health, addictions, substance and technology use research, programs, or services. (Asset)
  • Criminal and credit check required
