Hygiene Kits for Youth Facing Homelessness
Our Fall 2021 community project, Hygiene Kits for Youth Facing Homelessness, is a safe way for individuals and groups to volunteer and actively contribute to the community.
Help us reach our goal of 470 hygiene kits for youth in need across our region in Ottawa, Renfrew County, Prescott-Russell, and Lanark County.
How it works
Phase 1: Community members gather needed items, package them into individual kits, and drop them off at one of our four United Way East Ontario regional offices on October 29 or 30. Our staff will deliver the kits to agency partners across our region in early November for distribution to youth facing homelessness.
Phase 2: Community members gather needed items, package them into individual kits, and drop them off at our Ottawa Regional Office on Friday, December 10. Our staff will deliver the kits to agency partners across our region in mid December for distribution to youth facing homelessness.
How it helps
You’ll give youth in need essential items, support their well-being, and contribute resources that help front-line service providers carry out their vital work.
Each kit should contain a one-month supply of hygiene and personal care items for one person: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash or soap, a hairbrush or comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, body lotion and either shaving or menstrual supplies. We’ll provide you with a detailed supply list.
The cost per kit depends on the items selected and will generally be within $35 – 45 for items purchased individually at regular retail prices. Creativity and planning can lower overall costs: redeem store loyalty program points, purchase items in bulk, divide up the purchase of items among a larger group of people.
Who can volunteer?
We welcome participation from community members across our region: individuals, families, groups from workplaces, faith communities, clubs, schools, and teams.
What goes in a kit?
Each kit should contain a one-month supply of hygiene and personal care items for one person and will cost approximately $35 – 45, depending on the items selected. All items should be new/unused and placed in a clean plastic bag. United Way staff will repackage kits into sturdy plastic bags before distribution.
Each kit should include Hair, Body and Dental Care items and either Menstrual or Shaving Care items.
Brush or Comb
Body Wash or Bar Soap (2)
Tampons (15-20 regular size)
Disposable razors (4-5)
When selecting items for kits here are some things to keep in mind:
Gender-neutral products (not labelled as either for men or for women) are preferable
There is a need for hair care items suitable for textured, curly hair such as a wide-tooth or Afro pick comb; hydrating shampoo for textured or curly hair; and leave-in conditioner
Kits containing all unscented and fragrance-free products are welcomed for youth with skin sensitivities.
To offer everyone a safe and orderly drop-off experience we will be reaching out to confirm your scheduled drop-off date, time, and location.
