Position Summary and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director, Community Initiatives, the Senior Manager, Indigenous Employment Initiatives will utilize their expertise in the area of community building, knowledge of employment issues within the Indigenous community in East Ontario and writing skills to manage the development and execution of deliverables as outlined in the grant provided by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

In partnership with the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition, this project includes working with key stakeholders to build an Indigenous Employment Leadership Table to address the issues of labour market inclusion for Indigenous Youth, conducting research into the issue and developing best practices to support employers to ensure inclusive workplaces and practices.

This role will also provide strategic guidance to United Way East Ontario’s Poverty to Possibility Focus Area and work both externally with community stakeholders such as agency representatives, network and planning tables, funders, government and corporate supporters and donors, and internally, with United Way staff and volunteers.

Responsibilities:

Relationship Building and Community Development

  • Ensure all interactions and project deliverables are developed and maintained with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a focus on establishing inter-culturally competent relationships.
  • Participate in community events and appropriate networks and keep abreast of new developments and emerging issues.
  • Build and maintain the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition partnership throughout the project to ensure a strong and ongoing relationship.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with appropriate community partners including agencies, post- secondary institutions, government, funders and businesses, primarily as it relates to the deliverables of the project. and the Indigenous Employment Leadership Table and research aspects of the grant.
  • Actively convene and engage with community stakeholders across our region, through one-on-one meetings, network and planning tables, community consultation and information sessions.
  • Create and deliver applicable presentations to the appropriate wide range of audiences, related to the work of the project.
  • Build and maintain relationships to support the activities of the grant as they relate to focus groups and consultations.

Project Management

  • Oversee and manage the planning, stakeholder engagement, administration, program and committee oversight, reporting and grant management including for the grant activities and deliverables
  • Oversee and manage the development, implementation, execution and evaluation of the initiatives, activities and deliverables as outlined in the grant proposal.
  • Be accountable for expenses related to the overall project and keep the Finance team informed regularly
  • Complete funding reports for all projects.
  • Commit and support continuous learning within United Way East Ontario and the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition.

Research/Writing

  • Actively seek out, and work to understand up-to-date research and data to support the grant deliverables of writing and producing an environmental scan that identifies the labour market issues and gaps facing Indigenous Youth in East Ontario along with writing a final report for the funder.
  • Articulate key messages, develop briefs or prepare social policy recommendations associated with the grant and how this work supports and is aligned to the Poverty to Possibility Focus Area.

 

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Post-secondary education and/or related job experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.

Experience:

  • Working with or for Indigenous organizations and/or groups.
  • Minimum three years progressive employment experience in social development, social services and/or the voluntary sector with a comprehensive knowledge of social services systems.
  • Community capacity building and project management experience.
  • Experience in writing research documents, briefs, conducting research and focus groups.
  • Minimum of three years in a management position
  • Project management experience would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge and awareness of the Indigenous community
  • Experience in the employment sector, human resources, and/or learning and development experience
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and inter-culturally competent relationship building skills
  • Excellent relationship management skills and good ability to identify, build and maintain formal and informal networks an partnerships
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing actionable research
  • Ability to plan, scope, initiate and monitor progress for deliverable and work plans
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and present information, views and concepts in a concise and understandable format to a variety of key stakeholders and audiences.
  • Ability to identify, build and maintain formal and informal networks and partnerships, both internally and externally
  • Proven organizational, interpersonal, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and critically
  • Ability to problem solve and to respond effectively in difficult situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Strong analytical, and writing skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office is required
  • Written and oral fluency in English required with bilingualism considered an asset
