United Way East Ontario is hiring a Communications Officer to join our marketing and communications team.

Reporting to the Director, Communications, the Communications Officer is a strong writer, social media strategist, and skilled multimedia producer. You love to create compelling content that engages your target audience and inspires them to act. You’re not only plugged in to the latest and greatest trends online, but you also place huge importance on being connected to your community offline.

This is a hybrid position, based in Ottawa, but serves the region of Prescott-Russell, Ottawa, Lanark and Renfrew Counties.

As the Communications Officer, you will contribute to the success of United Way East Ontario’s communications, marketing, fundraising and other community engagement objectives. You will do this by creating a broad range of content that creatively expresses the mission, vision and values of the organization. With the support of the Director and the Senior Manager of Communications, you will lead and have ownership over projects but also work collaboratively with our team of talented storytellers.

Whether sharing behind-the-scenes posts on Instagram, managing a multi-channel campaign content calendar, taking photos, shooting and editing video, crafting a creative blog, or working on a corporate report – you move easily between media. If it’s a format you’ve never worked in before? No problem – you’re not afraid to do your research and give it a try. You are committed equally to both accuracy and creativity. You come to the table with fresh ideas.

  • Post secondary degree/diploma in Communications, Marketing, English, Journalism or Public Relations, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Tangible examples of hands-on experience in the upper years of college/university can be included among years of experience. A mix of college/university and full-time professional work is preferred.
    • Please note: Tangible experience in university/college can be considered in total years of experience.
  • 3+ years creating content for the web, with a demonstrated talent for video production and photography.
  • 3 + years writing in a variety of styles for journalistic media, social media and/or content marketing.
  • 3 + years generating copy and messages that clearly resonate and influence a broad range of audiences and stakeholders.
  • 3 + years managing multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Experience working in a newsroom or PR agency is an asset.


  • Writing, editing, photo and/or video production
  • Command of the principles and practice of communications, content marketing
  • Demonstrated online content creation and social media experience
  • Strong judgment, discretion and critical thinking skills that align with the objectives of United Way East Ontario
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex information to easy-to-understand content
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment
  • Excellent project and time management skills leading to an ability to balance and manage competing interests
  • Disciplined, precise approach to editing, proofreading and fact-checking
  • Flexibility, tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity
  • Proactive research practices to stay abreast of digital trends and emerging issues and topics of interest to United Way East Ontario
  • Strong listening skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
